A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machinery which is quite similar to a forklift. It enables the operator to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain things, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Typically, order pickers are operated by electricity. These type of machinery are mainly utilized in a warehouse environment. Most often they are used for transporting pallets and finishing particular jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the machinery forward, backward or steer it from side to side. As soon as the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be raised to the required level which makes it really convenient for the operator. Like for example, if the needed materials, are located on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then entire platform could be lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, some companies might have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker can also put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be used to finish these specific jobs at several companies instead.
