Lift Truck Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries utilized to run electric lift trucks must be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures should be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is vital for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located close to the charging area. The route to the post should not be obstructed and a worker who is injured should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Do not permit things like for example lighters or matches to be utilized while an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be correctly ventilated. The recharging process could release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
